And if we learned anything about him chatting with the other Avatars, is that some of them were fuck ups. When he died it would take another Avatar decades before they were ready to protect the world and resolve any conflicts that broke out while his next incarnation is growing up and training. Now what would Aang's motive be? The only thing I can think of is that he went insane when he realized he wouldn't be around forever. Season 2 wasn't out yet so the idea that Raava was needed to contain all 4 elements in a human vessel wasn't established yet, so a "fake Avatar" via energybending sounds possible. For most of season 1 of Korra, it explains why she can't Airbend or go into the Avatar State, why she kind of gets wrecked a decent amount, why the white lotus (under Aang's instruction) kept Korra in a compound instead of exploring, and why Amon can take people's bending (because he's Aang). I thought the Aang/Amon theory was bonkers until I saw this idea and it honestly makes a lot of sense. Because Airbending is the most spiritual so everyone, including her, would assume her inability to learn Airbending was the reason. Aang not giving her Airbending also gives a viable explanation on why, as a fake Avatar, she'd never go into the Avatar State or connect with past Avatars. Lack of Airbending gives Korra something to preoccupy herself with and never achieve, and never move onto anything else. He didn't give her Airbending, which is the most spiritual and the one she had trouble with. He gave a child, Korra, 3 types of bending via energybending.
